Everyone feels sadness...
Sometimes there is a reason, sometimes there is not. Feeling lethargic and sad is within a normal range of human emotions, However, feeling unable to move or think is a common symptom of depression. Depression is a mood disorder that causes a constant feeling of sadness and a loss of interest in activities we normally enjoy. Depression is not about being sad after the loss of a loved one or experiencing sickness, grief, professional failure, or injury. Even though those things are hard and can cause extreme sadness.
Depression is a serious struggle that no one should have to tolerate or deal with on their own. There have been numerous studies linking depression and other issues to the increasing rate of suicide in the world. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. If this deep level of sadness lasts more than two weeks, we suggest that you seek help.
Depression often occurs in multiple episodes throughout a person’s life and is marked by:
- Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness
- Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters
- Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities
- Sleep disturbances
- Tiredness and lack of energy
- Changes in appetite
- Anxiety, agitation or restlessness
- Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements
- Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or self-blame
- Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things
- Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide
- Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches
There are a variety of ways of treating depression, whether an individual has struggled with it for a short or long time and the severity. Many factors impact how depression presents itself for everyone as well. Depression therapy is suggested to be paired with medication, nutrition, and other health care modalities.
